Short answer:
When you rent cars on our platform, you'll pay an hourly or daily rate plus a rate per kilometre. The per kilometre rate includes fuel, and also compensates the Owner for all the other running costs associated with your driving, like tyre wear and servicing.
Distance rates
Each car has a distance rate chosen by its Owner. Owners can choose from these distance rates: 13c, 25c, 31c, 37c or 45c per kilometre. Keep in mind that borrowers also pay an additional 8c/km to Mobility Mutual for damage and loss cover. Each car's distance rate is displayed on its profile and in the search results.
After your trip has ended – or at intervals during your trip if you’re driving over 550 kilometres – we'll calculate how far you drove and charge you for each kilometre according to the distance rate.
What the distance rate includes
The distance rate includes all the fuel you use and helps to cover the Owner's other running costs from your driving. Running costs include things like tyre wear, servicing costs, and general wear and tear on the car.
Important
You must return the car with at least 1/4 of a tank of fuel. If it is left with less, there is a fee applicable. See Buying fuel during a trip for how to refuel the car and get reimbursed.
Different distance rates for different cars
Different cars cost different amounts to run, so we let the owner choose how much they charge per kilometre. An efficient hatchback is much cheaper to run than a fuel-guzzling van or convertible that needs premium fuel. Having different rates helps ensure the owner is adequately covered for their running costs.
Progressive payments for long trips
In most cases, distance charges are only charged after your trip has ended. For longer trips, we'll charge you $500 each time the distance you've driven reaches that value.
How far is $500? It depends on the distance rate of the car you've booked:
- At 21c/km, $500 is 2381km
- At 33c/km, $500 is 1515km
- At 39c/km, $500 is 1282km
- At 45c/km, $500 is 1111km
- At 53c/km, $500 is 943km
When you reach the $500 distance threshold (or $1,000, or $1,500, etc), we’ll notify you by email and SMS, and charge your card overnight. If you receive this message and won't be able to make the payment, please contact us right away.
You can view your current estimated distance from 24 hours after your trip has started. In the app, go to Trips and check the Trip cost summary. If you have push notifications turned on, you’ll also receive regular updates. Note that the distance updates periodically - you can see when it last updated under the cost.
Comments
I didn't drive the car today( sunday), but my trip is showing i drove 280km when it was only 238 km the last time I checked
Hi Clifford, the updates you see are not real time, they only update into our system periodically. This means that the distance you see might not include the last few hours. In this case, the number you saw on Sunday had updated with the rest of Saturday's distance.
Thanks for pointing out that this hadn't been mentioned in the article, I'll update it to avoid any further confusion!
