The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is making changes to how your earnings are reported for sharing your car.

From 1 July 2024:

  • All owners need to have valid tax details associated with their Uber Carshare account.
  • We will then start to report your earnings to ATO twice a year.
  • These changes are required because of the Sharing Economy Reporting Regime (SERR)

As part of these changes, you now need to add your personal tax details or your car-sharing business details to make sure we’re submitting your latest tax details to the ATO.

If we don’t have all the information we need, you may not get paid and we may make your car unavailable for sharing.

In this guide, find out:

  • How to add tax details
  • What details you need to provide
  • What happens if you don’t add your tax details
  • What this means for you

App

  1. Go to settings

  3. Fill in the form

What details you need to provide

You’re car sharing as part of business

You need to provide:

  • ABN
  • Business address
  • Contact details

If you have international business, you need to provide your TIN instead of an ABN.

You’re not car-sharing as part of a business

You need to provide:

  • Your legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Contact details

What happens if you don’t add your tax details?

Existing owners

If you don’t confirm your tax details by 1 July 2024, then you may not get paid and we may make your car unavailable for sharing.

This means:

  • You won’t get any new bookings
  • We’ll cancel any existing bookings
  • You’ll be charged for cancelled bookings in accordance with the cancellation policy

New owners

If you don’t add your tax details before we process earnings for the month, then you won’t be paid for that month.

What this means for you

Add your details

Make sure you keep your tax details up to date on your Uber Carshare account.

We’ll share these details with the ATO

We’re required to report your earnings to ATO twice a year.

We’ll report your earnings from:

  • 1 July to 31 December
  • 1 January to 30 June

What’s not changing

Your financial documents

This doesn’t change the documents we give you. Your monthly invoice or financial year summary won’t look any different.

How you process your tax return

You still need to report any earnings and deductions from sharing your car on your tax return. This doesn’t change how much tax you pay.

Speak to your accountant or the ATO

If you need advice specific to your situation, get in touch with your accountant or the ATO.

Common questions

What if my tax details change?

If your tax details change whilst you’re sharing your car, all you need to do is fill in the form again with your latest details.

So if you previously shared your car under your name, but you now have an ABN for it, use the business form to add your ABN.

Registering for GST or deregistering

Contact us to update your GST registration status. For specifics on whether you should register or not, seek advice from the ATO or your accountant.
