Withdrawing refunds from your member account

Short answer:

Any amounts we refund to you will be added to your available balance in your member account. You can withdraw these funds back to your card anytime, or we'll do it automatically within a few days. It may then take your bank up to five days to process the refund.

If we need to refund you, these funds will be refunded to your member account as your 'available balance'. Your available balance will be refunded to your card within a few days, or you can withdraw it yourself anytime.

Note: This function is only available to borrowers. Owners will be paid their car's income directly into their bank account each month. If an owner books a trip in another member's car and pays a deposit, the refund of the deposit will also be paid out with their monthly income.

Withdrawing funds back to your card

  1. Log in to the website or app
  2. In the menu, select Account and then Account summary
  3. You'll see your available balance displayed
  4. Click Manage
  5. Click Withdraw balance or Withdraw money
  6. Allow 3-5 business days for the refund to be processed by the bank

In rare cases, a refund back to a card may fail. It may take 30 days for your bank to refund us the funds sent to them so we can refund them to you again.

The balance of your deposit from your first trip should be available in your member account after the trip is billed, which in most cases is within 24 hours of your trip ending. In a small number of cases the billing can take a little longer and the funds won't be available in your account until after the billing is complete.

If your first trip is cancelled, the refunded deposit will be available in your member account after the trip was due to end. You will then need to pay a new deposit on your next booking, until you have successfully completed a trip.

If you book a trip while you have funds in your available balance (for example if you book a trip before withdrawing the funds from your deposit refund), the funds in your available balance will be reserved to use towards the payment for that trip. This means you won't be able to withdraw them until after the next trip is completed.

You can only withdraw funds to the card used to make the original payment

You can only withdraw funds back to the card that was used to make the original payment. It's not possible for us to send the funds to a different card or bank account. If you've changed the credit card details in your member account, you'll need to change the details back to the card you originally used to make the payment and withdraw the funds to that card.

If your card has been cancelled, contact your bank. They can credit the withdrawn amount to your new card, or by cheque or direct deposit to your bank account.

  • The deposit will be available in your Car Next Door after billing has been completed, which in most cases is within 24 hours of your trip ending. In a small number of the cases, the billing can take an extra day or two and your deposit will be available once it's complete. I've added the information to the article.

  • I request a refund on the 16/8/2019 and still have not received the money.

My bank processes transfers within 1-2 days so it’s obviously something wrong on Car Next Doors end.

Waiting this long for a refund is a massive inconvenience and also will deter me from ever using the app again in the future.

Can you please confirm why this has taken so long?

  • It’s misleading not to mention that you cannot withdraw your deposit balance if you have an active trip. My first trip was completed, I then borrowed a second car and now I can’t return that cash and access my own money until this trip is complete. That’s not mentioned anywhere and is an inconvenience.
Separately, why does CND actually withdraw this money, when other companies ‘hold’ the money but do not withdraw it. There’s an elitist assumption that everyone has this kind of money to spare and can afford for it to be tied up in inconvenient processes (judging by other comments) for days/weeks. Flies in the face of your case that you’re ‘cheaper’ than other options when you become an obstacle to peoples money & their capacity to access it.

  • I agree with Julianne above. Also paid deposit in 1st car rental which has completed over week ago but because have booked a future 2nd trip cannot access my balance for the 1st even though my 1st trip has been successfully completed and charged. Highly inconvenient holding on to people's money like that! At least refund deposit/balance from 1st tripince completed as has nothing to do with future trips. Treat the two separately as deters me from booking future trips knowing I won't get my initial bond back unless I have e no trips in the system... doesn't make sense?? Please fix as puts a stain on what is otherwise a really good app

  • Hi Peter and Julianne, I've updated the article to include that you won't be able to withdraw funds while you have an upcoming booking. Thanks for pointing out that was missing. I'll also pass your feedback on as I can see how that would be frustrating. You only pay a deposit on your first trip, so it would only be an issue for your second trip, but I do understand it's still inconvenient so I will share your feedback.
